Story: The sheltered Sorey becomes the legendary Shepherd, the hero tasked with purifying the evil forces that plague the world. He embarks on a journey with his best friend and new allies to defeat the Lord of Calamity, who seeks to plunge all into chaos.
Setting: Tales of Zestiria focuses on the continent of Glenwood, specifically the rival kingdoms of Hyland and Rolance. Every so often a new Lord of Calamity will threaten the world, the Shepherd will appear to stop him, and peace returns until the cycle starts again.
The world’s population is made up of humans, seraphim, and hellions. Seraphim possess unique abilities (seraphic artes) and watch over humans, and are considered holy by the continent’s primary religion. Hellions are a type of monster created when a human or seraph falls to malevolence, a force generated by humanity’s negative emotions. The vast majority of humans are unable to perceive either seraphim or hellions, and the loss of faith in the former has contributed to the corruption in society.
